“Steps Toward Inner Peace” by Peace Pilgrim

10 03 2010

Last month I had the good fortune to visit a wonderful place, Key West, Florida. It’s a great walking town with all sorts of interesting architecture, shops, scenic views, ice blue water, and characters.

My stroll through town took me into a health food store and vegan restaurant. During the week I was in Key West. I suspended my customary 75/25 Vegetarian / Animal fat dietary ratio while in town and had a few steak dinners and a variety of other high cholesterol delights. All very self-indulgent and delicious. But knowing my body’s limits, I started the end -of -the -party detox process with some fresh vegetable juice.

While I was waiting for vegetarian antidote of carrot celery juice, I browsed through a bunch of circulars in the waiting area and happened to notice a pile of blue pamphlets on a table. I picked one up and stuffed it into my pocket, not knowing if there would be anything of merit in the booklet.

The next morning I sat in the Key West Airport departure lounge on my way back to Austin and decided to see if the little pamphlet contained any pearls of wisdom.

To my surprise, the booklet, “Steps Toward Inner Peace” by Peace Pilgrim (yes, her real name) is a great read and a remarkable story and lesson on the meaning of life. It’s a spiritual journey taken by a woman whose only goal in life was to be the change that she wanted to see in the world and in people.

Her journey was a 25,000 mile walk with nothing but the shoes on her feet and the clothing on her back. She was penniless, relying on the kindness of others for her food and shelter.

“I can truly tell you that without ever asking for anything, I have been supplied with everything needed for my journey which shows you how good people really are.”

The 32 page booklet is chocked full of inspiring lessons from a practicing aesthetic.
Here are some of my edited high lights from the little pamphlet:

“My primary subject is peace within ourselves is a step toward peace in our world.”
“Be willing to face life squarely and get down beneath the surface of life where the verities and realities can be found.”

“Realize that no problem ever comes to you that does not have a purpose in your life, that cannot contribute to your inner growth.”

“Collective problems must be solved by us collectively, and no one finds inner peace who avoids doing his or her share in the solving of collective problems like world disarmament and world peace.”

“It is important to remain in harmony with the laws that govern the universe. These laws are well known. We are happy when we obey these laws and get into trouble when we don’t.”

“Some of the best work on the planet is the work that doesn’t pay anything.”

“Happiness and peace do not have a dollar value.”

“Simplify your life. Anything beyond the necessities tends to be burdensome.”

“Hate injures the hater, not the hated.”

“Your motive, if you are going to find inner peace, must be an outer motive-it must be service. It must be giving and not getting.”

“We are all cells in the body of humanity. We are not separate from our fellow human beings. The whole thing is a totality.”

“All people can be peace workers. Whenever you bring harmony into any unpeaceful situation, you contribute to the total peace picture, insofar as you have peace in your life; you reflect it into your surroundings and into the world.”

Peace Pilgrim is no longer with us, but her words of wisdom live on.
Now, if I can only live by these principles every day…….working on it…..

Haiti Earthquake Relief

23 01 2010

Our bothers and sisters in Haiti need our money, prayers, and support. The original earthquakes have been followed by several aftershocks making the rescue efforts even more challenging. They need financial support now.

The conditions in Haiti are desparate.

AmeriCares is a global charity that I have used for years that is very efficient, with very low administrative costs and very effective in getting the funds directly to people who need it (not intermediaries). If you feel moved to give, here is a link for Haitian relief:

Taking a Health Setback and Turning it into a Blessing- DR. Jonci Jensen

20 01 2010

How do we take a health setback and turn it into something positive? How do you find the kernel of goodness in a chronic illness and use it for the benefit of others?

In every setback are the seeds of opportunity.

One Saturday morning I met Dr. Jonci Jensen by chance standing in line for a cup of coffee at Lance Armstrong’s  Juan Pelota Coffee Shop that is inside his bicycle shop in Austin, Texas. I heard her mention to the cashier that she is a Naturopath with a practice in South Austin. Immediately I struck up a conversation since I’m always interested in speaking with natural healers.

We agreed to catch up for tea at her office on South Austin in a few weeks. I’m always on the lookout for good Naturopaths and new natural healing modalities.

When we met, the most interesting aspect of my discussion with Dr. Jonci was how she became a natural healer (though she will be quick to correct you by saying that her patients are the real healers). It was not by design or plan, but was a result of a very painful, crippling illness. Hers is an inspiring story about how we turn a setback into a positive force for change in our lives and then share the journey with others through the healing arts.

Before the revelation journey, Dr Jonci was studying to be an engineer at the University of Michigan with the intention of going to conventional medical school to earn her medical doctorate.   After becoming disenchanted with the state of the American health care system, she began consulting on technology integration.  She quickly found herself on the corporate fast track, working on some high profile projects with a major auto manufacturer in Detroit. She was flying on corporate jets, rubbing elbows with powerful executives, and involved in business discussions that were very advanced for a woman her age. She was taking the express train to the executive suite as an ambitious young woman, but it wasn’t filling her deep down need to help people.  She was burning the candle at both ends, but not fulfilling her heart.   After reading an article about a career in naturopathic medicine, Dr. Jensen left Detroit for Arizona and Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine.

By the end of her first year, Dr. Jonci had organized the 1st Annual Naturopathic Medical Student Conference, fought to create an Interest Group to educate MD and DO students about naturopathic medicine, lobbied twice on Capital Hill for healthcare reforms, and initiated the creation of a national organization for naturopathic medical students.   Then in her second year of school, all of a sudden her world came crashing down. She began to experience severe joint pain and inflammation in many areas of her body. She was losing mobility and in constant, crippling pain.  Her work schedule and studies had to be curtailed suddenly as she could not function in some basic ways. It was devastating to her to admit that she would need to withdraw from naturopathic medical school.  She was unable to even leave her apartment to withdraw in person so tearfully called the Registrar’s Office in the middle of her second year to leave her path towards becoming a doctor.

After numerous medical diagnostic tests, she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) based upon her clinical presentation. RA is a chronic, systematic inflammatory disorder that can affect many tissues and organs, but is usually associated with destruction of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also produce inflammation in other areas of the body including the lungs, pleura, and pericardium.  Dr. Jonci’s rheumatologist at the time said that her disease “would not kill her, but would rob her of a good part of her life.”

About 1% of the world’s population is afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis. Women three times more often than men. The disease most often affects women between the ages of 40 and 50, but people of any age can be affected. It is a painful, disabling condition that may include loss of functioning and mobility. It is diagnosed by blood test, X-rays, and clinical experience with the disease. Rheumatologists are the medical expert that specializes in the diseases of joints and connective tissues.

The conventional therapy includes physical therapy, anti-inflammatory drugs such as steroids, pain killers, and other drugs such as DMARDs (disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs).

Dr. Jonci refused these conventional medical protocols for RA and instead began changing her lifestyle through her knowledge and studies of naturopathic medicine. Her Rheumatologist later informed her that he “had little hope for her in the beginning”. She was already $75,000 in debt with school loans and unable to even walk down the stairs of her apartment let alone finish a naturopathic medical doctorate.

After recovering from her doctor’s sentence to “pain and suffering without parole for the rest of your life” Dr Jonci decided to take action and pursue the natural route to healing.

Homeopathy and botanical medicine, combined with a gluten-free, vegan diet, combined with stress reduction techniques enabled her to make huge healing strides in just a few months. She reenrolled in classes, at first on the “slow track”.  She eventually finished her degree with her class and on time.  She also completed the creation of the Naturopathic Medical Student Association (NMSA), a national organization for naturopathic medical students that is the only naturopathic medical student affiliate of the AANP (American Association of Naturopathic Physicians) and AMSA (American Medical Student Association).

After these remarkable results she decided to share the benefits of this recovery from “hopeless case” to fully functioning person, she decided to share her experience through a career in the healing arts.  She feels is it her dharma to share this inner path of healing with others.  She took her personal health setback, recovered from it and is using it as a blessing for those that are taking the same journey she took a few years ago  Dr. Jonci learned the painful way that healing was not in a bottle, prescription or otherwise.  True healing comes from inside with the help of a knowledgeable guide.

Salad Dressing Ingredients12.06.09

This File has complete story.

The herb dressing relies on fresh herbs when available. Basil and parsley grow in a in a pot on our deck. If you are short on space or live in an apartment, this is the way to go. Fresh-picked herbs are preferred ingredients.

In the garden I grow oregano, rosemary, mint, thyme, and other popular herbs. When the garden isn’t producing or I can’t grow what I need, the farmers market supplies a wide variety of good, fresh herbs. Most of the herbs I use are local, in season so the ingredients change a little bit from season to season.

Garden Herb Recipe

Note: These healing effects apply based on an individual’s specific body chemistry. They also apply when a proper diagnosis and prescription has been made by a trained medical professional. The therapeutic benefits (disease prevention) can be gained by adding these fresh herbs to food on a regular basis. Consult your Naturopathic healer for details on herbal remedies. Do not serve to people with allergies to peppers or soy products.

I add fresh cayenne and habernero peppers to taste. Less is usually better unless you like heat. If you fi8nd that you have gone overboard on the pepper, add more honey. It neutralizes the heat.

How to Build Community

19 11 2009

Last night I saw this sign by the door at Casa de Luz, a gem of a place in Austin that serves macrobiotic meals, has great speakers, offers Yoga, Qi Gong, educational programs, an elementary school, and other useful services.

The person who is the inspiration for Casa de Luz is Eduardo “Wayo” Longuria. He is building a community starting with Casa de Luz as the starting point. It’s a great community similar to the Global Peace Project Foundation with a membership that is committed to improving our world starting with the local community. Inclusive, non-judgemental, and welcoming.

The first time I met Wayo he treated me to lunch at the Casa de Luz restaraunt and thanked me for writing my book, Rich Remedies, Volume 1. He said anything that helps people learn about natural healing is a good thing. He also explained his vision around community. It’s all about getting back to the basics and looking out for each other. The village where we’re helping each other out instead of just “looking out for number one.”

The sign says it all. Here are the first few lines:
> Turn off your TV
> Know your neighbors (this can be tough sometimes!)
> Look up when you are walking
> Greet people
> Sit on your stoop
> Plant flowers
> Use the library
> Play together
> Buy from local merchants
> Share what you have
> Help a lost dog
> Take children to the park
> Garden together
> Support neighborhood schools
> Fix it even if you did not break it
> Honor Elders
> Pick up litter
Talk to the mail carrier
> Listen to the birds
> Put up a swing
> Etc….etc…

Let’s all do our part to build community.

Bringing Peace to Autistic Children. Equine Healer & Trainer- Janice Terra, Houston, Texas

2 11 2009
Energetic Healing

Janice Terra Equestrian Trainer & Equine Healer

Janice Terra has years of equine training experience in both competitive arenas and in energetic healing.

I was privileged to witness a day at her training facility where she was providing equine therapy for children with autism. Dr. Juan Acosta, a brain specialist, was present with brain scanning equipment taking before/ after measurements of the children’s brainwaves to determine how effective riding Janice’s horses around the ring was to their minds as measured by left brain/ right brain integration and the presence of alpha and theta brain waves as compare with normal brain activity of amongst nonautistic patients. A report documenting these results including the brain scans will be available in the near future.

The brain scans showed improvements in all of the autistic riders. The rider pictured here has had a positive shift in his social skills since his work with Janice and her horse. For the first time in his life, he is initiating conversations with people. Prior to the equine therapy, he was reticent and reserved in social situations. The family considers this change in behavior a positive developement according to Janice.

In addition to her wonderful healing work with horses, Janice is a “horse whisperer”. This means that she has a unique ability to communicate with horses in a way that is very rare amongst humans.

Janice can train the “untrainable” horse and has proven this many times. Her specialty is in training horses with difficult dispositions whose owners are looking for “the trainer of last resort.” Janice has saved many horses through her unique training methods and God-given gifts.

If you are are interested in learning more, contact Janice Terra at: janiceterra@comcast.net

Janice is available for training horses in multiple disciplines and has a methodology to increase the speed of racing thoroughbreds.

More to come……

PS- Janices’s work will be featured in a chapter in my upcoming book “Earth Energy”.

His Holiness the Fifth Karma Kuchen Rinpoche in Dallas September 25- 27

26 09 2009

His Holiness the Fifth Karma Kuchen Rinpoche is in Dallas September 25 to 27th 2009. Part of his mission will be to consecrate the Cathedral of Hope Church in Dallas which is a huge supporter of the Global Peace Project Foundation.

“Karma Kuchen Rinpoche is recognized by His Holiness Dujom Rinpoche and Penor Rinpoche as the unmistaken incarnation of previous Karma Kuchen Rinpoche, Karma Thegchog Nyingpo.

He was invited to Namdroling Monastery where Penor Rinpoche looked after him and provided him with basic religious education. Karma Kuchen Rinpoche excelled in all the monastic training and mastered all the traditional knowledge of The Palyul Lineage. He also received numerous Nyingma Teachings from great masters such as His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Penor Rinpoche.

Keeping in view of his wonderful qualities of a master, His Holiness Penor Rinpoche appointed him as the Head of the Palyul Mother Monastery in Tibet in 1994. On 14 August 2000, he was formally enthroned as the lineage holder of the Palyul Tradition and is now the 12th throne holder of The Palyul Lineage. Penor Rinpoche on many occasions appreciated his efforts in holding the pure lineage of Palyul tradition and dissemination of Buddha Dharma in the Land of Snows.

The significant achievement of Karma Kuchen Rinpoche since his arrival in Tibet was that he had built many temples, stupas, prayer wheels, images of deities and other objects of veneration and faith. Under the direction of His Holiness Penor Rinpoche, he has built a very grand and magnificent temple within the monastery premises.

Of the many remarkable qualities that he possesses, the most striking quality is his strict and pure observance of all the vows of a monk.” (Biographical info copied with sincere gratitude from www.palyul.org/eng_biotulku_karmakuchen.htm)
