How to Build Community

19 11 2009

Last night I saw this sign by the door at Casa de Luz, a gem of a place in Austin that serves macrobiotic meals, has great speakers, offers Yoga, Qi Gong, educational programs, an elementary school, and other useful services.

The person who is the inspiration for Casa de Luz is Eduardo “Wayo” Longuria. He is building a community starting with Casa de Luz as the starting point. It’s a great community similar to the Global Peace Project Foundation with a membership that is committed to improving our world starting with the local community. Inclusive, non-judgemental, and welcoming.

The first time I met Wayo he treated me to lunch at the Casa de Luz restaraunt and thanked me for writing my book, Rich Remedies, Volume 1. He said anything that helps people learn about natural healing is a good thing. He also explained his vision around community. It’s all about getting back to the basics and looking out for each other. The village where we’re helping each other out instead of just “looking out for number one.”

The sign says it all. Here are the first few lines:
> Turn off your TV
> Know your neighbors (this can be tough sometimes!)
> Look up when you are walking
> Greet people
> Sit on your stoop
> Plant flowers
> Use the library
> Play together
> Buy from local merchants
> Share what you have
> Help a lost dog
> Take children to the park
> Garden together
> Support neighborhood schools
> Fix it even if you did not break it
> Honor Elders
> Pick up litter
Talk to the mail carrier
> Listen to the birds
> Put up a swing
> Etc….etc…

Let’s all do our part to build community.
